Warner Bros. Studio Tour !!
Wednesday. To an ordinary LA resident it's another day at the office. Reminding themselves that there is only 1 day in between today and Friday. But not for our family. It was up, out to Johnny Rockets for breakfast and then off to Warner Bros. for our 5 1/2 hour Deluxe Tour.
So after one delicious breakfast it was down to the Lobby which was currently being renovated. Out to the Valet area and what are the odds? A taxi is there waiting!! So we asked the driver to take us to Warner Bros. Gate 5. It took about 15 minutes in 9am traffic from Hollywood Blvd to Riverside Dr. We were very fortunate as the peak hour traffic was going the other way.
We soon paid the driver and he was off. After walking through the Metal Detector we arrived inside the Warner Bros Store. We checked in for our tour and received our tickets. We walked around the shop for about 10 minutes. Then we decided to sit down and relax before our tour started.
At 10:10am the doors opened to this small movie theatre type room. In here one lady told us what we would be seeing in here. We saw a 5 minute film outlining a brief history of the lot. After that the tour guides came in. We where divided into 4 groups; A, B, C and D. We where D!!
We got to hold a real Oscar which was awarded to Warner Bros.
Next we were shown to our trolley and we drove through Gate 5- the gate that all the producers, directors and other big names go through. We stopped at the first building. This building was one of the producers office buildings. Most of the sets have an interior but not as you think it may be. They are working offices. Our tour guide, Thom gave us a little history lesson on Warner Bros. They started out by distributing movies.
That was great but the Warner brothers wanted to expand from distributing movies to making movies. So in the time of silent films, Warner Bros created The Jazz Singer starring Al Jolson. This was considered the first full-length talking movie although there was only less than 10 minutes of talking out of the 89 minutes in the whole film.
Warner Bros used to have a partnership with Columbia Pictures. At this time the studios were called Burbank Studios. In the 1980s or 90s Columbia dropped Warner Bros. for Sony Pictures. So then the studio's name was changed back to Warner Bros.
Then we were taken into the jungle. There was a lagoon where George Clooney saved a boy in the TV series ER. In this jungle they had someone's house from Hart of Dixie. Then we went to this house. This house has been used in The Mentalist and has also been used in a commercial.
Then we went to a practical set. A practical set is where the inside of a set is real but doesn't have any furniture. If the set had 2 floors on the outside the top floor would be lighting.
After that we went onto the backlot. We saw the set where SpiderMan hangs upside down and kisses Kirsten Dunts' character, The Gotham City Courthouse, President Bartlett's Campaign office from The West Wing, Central Park from Friends and Smallville from The Muppets. (Warner Bros. let other companies use their set)
Next we go into Audio Underground. This is where the Foley stages are. In one stage they were doing some sounds for Ben 10 Omniverse. A foley stage is where they make the simple noises like footsteps, pouring water and closing a door. In the stage we went into they where previously recorded some noises for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.
Thom told us what a facade was and what materials are common to find on the set. A Facade is just the front of a set. They use fiber-glass and wood made to look like certain objects.
We saw some people setting up for a scene of Hart of Dixie
Next we went to the props department. There where a few items on hold for CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. Then we went into this room which was a FRIENDS copy set. This had all of the real props from the show. Gunther from Friends was originally designed as a non-speaking character but they asked the actor if he could operate a coffee machine and he said he worked in a cafe so yes he could. So the writers changed his role.
We went into a car showcase place and saw all of the Batman cars, The Mystery Machine, The Wonka Bike, Steve Carell's car from Get Smart the movie and The Weasley's Car from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. We got our photo in front of a green screen. The image behind us was the Hogwarts Express at Platform 9 3/4.
Next was LUNCH!! We ate at the Commissary. I had the Warner Burger, Dad had Pasta and Mum had the New York Steak Salad.
Next we went into the Hart of Dixie soundstage which was in Studio 7A. This show wasn't filmed in front of a studio audience so the house didn't have a giant opening! Next was The Big Bang Theory's soundstage. You couldn't go onto the set and all of the furniture was covered up.
After that we went into the Warner Bros. Museum. The ground floor was TV and Movie items. They had some things from Man of Steel and Smallville (an old Superman TV series). On the top floor it was Harry Potter exhibits. They had the sorting hat. I was Gryffindoor, Dad was Slytherin and Mum was Hufflepuff!! We saw Voldemort's snake.
After that we collected our photos from the car place back at the shop and then the tour was over. We had a lot of fun and I loved this!!
